You paid for a full set, and your eyes still look the same, or worse, the lashes seem to disappear the moment you open your eyes. That usually happens because the map was designed for a lid you don’t have. This guide focuses on the three eye shapes that tend to cause the most frustration: hooded, monolid, and downturned. You’ll find the nine styles that tend to suit these eye shapes best, the three to approach carefully, and what to ask for during your consultation so you leave with eyes that look open and lifted.

First, Which Eye Shape Do You Actually Have?

Stand in front of a mirror and look straight ahead.

  1. Is your crease visible when your eyes are open? If a fold of skin covers most or all of the crease, you have hooded eyes. If there is no crease at all, you have monolid eyes.
  2. Draw an imaginary straight line from the inner corner to the outer corner of your eye. If the outer corner sits noticeably lower, your eyes are downturned.
  3. You can be more than one at once. Hooded + downturned is the most common combination.

What Lash Mapping Actually Means (In Plain English)

Lash mapping is the plan your artist draws on the pad or paper before she starts. It decides where the longest lashes will sit and how they taper toward the corners. Think of it like a haircut rather than a hair colour; the shape is decided before anything is applied. That's why saying “just make them nice” often gives you someone else’s eyes. “Style” here means the overall shape of the set, not a particular brand of lash.

Why Your Last Set Didn’t Look Good

Lashes can either curve forward or lift straight up from the root. When you have a lid that folds over or sits flat, only the second kind stays visible once your eyes are open. You do not need to memorise curl letters. Tell your artist: “I want lift from the root, not a curve.” Your artist can then choose the curl that best suits your eye shape.

One sign your last set wasn't quite right: if you can only see your lashes clearly when you look down, the curl was wrong, not the length.

Hooded Eyes: Ask For Lift, Not Length

The fold of skin hides length. Longer lashes make the problem worse because they disappear under the hood or brush against the brow bone.

The longest lashes should sit over the centre of the eye, where the lid is most open, rather than sweeping out to the outer corner. A little texture stops the lash line from reading as one heavy dark bar. Keep the inner corners short so the eye does not feel crowded.

If you can feel the tips when you blink, or they brush your brow bone, they are too long for your lid. A hard cat-eye map that places the longest length at the very outer corner often drags a hooded lid further down.

Small Or Heavily Hooded Eyes

When the fold covers most of the visible lid, go shorter and lighter than feels intuitive. Keep one consistent lift across the whole eye rather than mixing curls. The goal is an open, awake look, not simply longer lashes. Those are two different goals.

Monolid Eyes: Ask For Depth, Not Length

Without a visible crease, the lash line sits on a flatter plane, so a uniform set can read as a straight dark fringe no matter how long it is. What helps is texture: deliberate peaks and dips create the shadow and dimension a crease would normally give.

If your natural lashes grow downward, the lift needs to compensate for that. That's why a soft, even natural set often looks like nothing on monolid eyes. Keep the very inner corners short and comfortable; if the inner lashes poke or make your eye water, they were placed too far in.

Downturned Eyes: Ask For The Peak To Move Inward

The longest lashes should peak just past the centre of the eye and then come back down at the outer corner. Adding length at the very outer corner follows the natural direction of your eye and can make the droop more noticeable. That’s why the classic cat-eye and fox-eye maps you see on Instagram often look wrong on downturned eyes.

Squirrel and kitten maps do the opposite: they place the peak earlier and taper the outer corner, creating a lifted effect. Request “a squirrel or kitten map with the longest length just past the centre and a soft outer corner.”

Three Styles To Think Twice About

  • Dramatic cat eye: Length at the outer corner pulls hooded and downturned eyes further down. Opt for a modified version with the peak moved inward.
  • Very long classic sets: Length without the right curl simply disappears under a hood. Prioritise lift over millimetres.
  • Mega volume: The extra weight can close the lid visually and stress fine natural lashes. A lighter hybrid or classic set often looks more open.

None of these styles are off-limits; they just need to be adapted to suit your eye shape.

Shorter And Lighter Than You Think

Most clients with these three eye shapes book longer and fuller each time because the previous set “didn’t show.” Weight sitting on a lid that already folds makes the eye look heavier and more closed. Your natural lashes carry that weight for the full six weeks.

The real sign that a set is right is that people say you look well-rested, not that your lashes look long. On deeper skin tones, a dense jet-black line can also read as harsh eyeliner; a softer brown-black often defines without the hard edge. It's worth mentioning during your consultation.

When A Lash Lift Beats Extensions For Your Eye Shape

Comparing lash lift with lash extensions

If your natural lashes are medium-to-long but grow downward, a Korean lash lift plus tint can open the eye more effectively than extensions and with far less upkeep. If your lashes are sparse or very short, extensions are usually the better option because they can create shape that isn't there naturally. Not sure which suits you? FAQs

Can hooded eyes wear a cat eye at all?

Yes, ask for a modified cat eye where the peak sits further in, and the very outer corner comes back down.

Which lash curl is best for hooded eyes?

One that lifts straight up from the root rather than curving forward (often an L or L+ curl, but let your artist choose).

Do lash extensions work on monolid eyes?

Yes. The key is depth through spike or textured mapping and a curl that lifts from the root, not extra length.

Why do my extensions poke my eyelid?

Usually the curl was too strong for how deep your lid sits, or lashes were placed too far into the inner corner. Both can usually be corrected during a touch-up, so don't assume you have to put up with uncomfortable extensions.

How long do lash extensions last?

A well-mapped set typically lasts 4–6 weeks with proper care and regular infills.

What About Almond, Round Or Upturned Eyes?

These shapes are generally more forgiving and can wear a wider range of maps, including classic cat eye and longer lengths. A consultation is still the fastest way to match the style to your exact features.
